Quick percentage increase examples

100 → 125 = 25% increase
50 → 75 = 50% increase
200 → 260 = 30% increase
50 → 100 = 100% increase
50 → 125 = 150% increase

How percentage increase works

Percentage increase measures how much a value has grown relative to the original value. The original value is the reference point, which is why it goes in the denominator.

(New − Original) ÷ Original × 100

Example calculation

If a value increases from 100 to 125, the absolute increase is 25. Since 25 is one quarter of 100, the percentage increase is 25%.

(125 − 100) ÷ 100 × 100 = 25%

Common uses

  • Revenue and sales growth
  • Investment performance
  • Price increases
  • Website traffic and analytics
  • Salary raises and budgeting

Common percentage increase mistakes

Dividing by the new value

Percentage increase should be based on the original value. If a price rises from 100 to 125, divide the increase by 100, not by 125.

Confusing increase with final value

A 25% increase does not mean the new value is 25% of the original. It means the new value is 125% of the original.

Mixing up percentages and percentage points

If a rate moves from 4% to 5%, that is a 1 percentage point increase, but a 25% relative increase in the rate itself.

Thinking increase and decrease reverse each other

A 25% increase is not reversed by a 25% decrease. If 100 increases to 125, it takes a 20% decrease to return to 100.

What is percentage increase?

Percentage increase is a way to express growth relative to the starting value. Instead of only saying that something increased by 25 units, percentage increase tells you how large that change is compared to where it started.

That context matters. An increase of 25 is huge if the original value was 50, but much smaller if the original value was 10,000. Percentages make those situations easier to compare.

Percentage increase formula

The standard formula is:

(New Value − Original Value) ÷ Original Value × 100

First find the difference between the new value and the original value. Then divide that difference by the original value. Finally, multiply by 100 to express the result as a percentage.

Can percentage increase be more than 100%?

Yes. A 100% increase means the value has doubled. A 200% increase means the value has tripled compared to the original value. Percentage increases are not capped at 100%, unlike percentage decreases in many normal contexts.

Percentage Increase FAQ

How do you calculate percentage increase?

Subtract the original value from the new value, divide by the original value, then multiply by 100.

What is the formula for percentage increase?

The formula is: (New Value − Original Value) ÷ Original Value × 100.

What is a 100% increase?

A 100% increase means the value has doubled. For example, increasing from 50 to 100 is a 100% increase.

Can percentage increase be more than 100%?

Yes. If the new value is more than double the original value, the percentage increase is greater than 100%.

What happens if the new value is lower?

If the new value is lower than the original value, the result is negative and represents a percentage decrease.

What is the difference between percentage increase and percentage points?

Percentage increase is a relative change. Percentage points measure the absolute difference between two percentages. Moving from 10% to 15% is a 5 percentage point increase, but a 50% relative increase.
